You know what your business needs better than anyone. Investing in the relationship helps us learn your business and work with you and your broker to develop the loss prevention and risk transfer solutions you need. As the relationship develops and we gain a deeper understanding of your business, you will be able to leverage our knowledge into highly tailored loss prevention and property underwriting solutions.
Driven by performance
AFM places all of our business through our broker partners. Services such as account engineering, online training and loss control visits and many of the other services are unique in the marketplace. Investing in a long-term partnership helps us both unlock this additional value for our mutual clients—leading to strong and lasting relationships.
Long-term partnerships enable both insurer and insured to lower the cost of risk over time. For clients, that means the freedom to focus on growing their business and adding value to their products and services. For AFM, a lower cost of risk enables us to invest in our clients and brokers by providing broad coverage, stable capacity and world-class engineering services, all at a competitive price. When everybody partners, everybody wins.
Your account engineer is the liaison between our consultant engineers, our broker partner and client decision-makers. Working closely with you and the consultant engineers, account engineers establish risk improvement priorities and implement practical solutions that help lower long-term costs of risk. If you have questions about risk reports, online training or reducing loss exposure during an addition or acquisition, your account engineer is your primary resource.
Working with our broker partners, production underwriters leverage information gathered from engineering to develop a programme customised to client needs. Each underwriter has the authority to set limits and deductibles to expedite the deal. Countless hours of training and on-the-job experience help underwriters develop creative solutions to unique coverage needs.
AFM consultant engineers are members of the same communities where clients' businesses reside. They have a working knowledge of common occupancies, construction methods and the natural hazard threats in their region. They leverage this local knowledge with AFM institutional knowledge and, after meeting with local client personnel, produce risk reports that explain exposures and risk-reduction strategies.
Account administrators work behind the scenes to process policy documents and endorsements expeditiously. Working closely with the production underwriter, your account administrator ensures that all the variables are covered. The result is that policy documents are delivered quickly and accurately.
Before entering a partnership, we conduct an assessment of your business’s risk performance factors. In many cases, an account engineer will visit a few of your locations; we expect to engage you in a long-term relationship and want to begin on a solid foundation of mutual understanding.
During the prospect visit the account engineer pointed out an exposure that we had never considered. Right on the spot he offered a solution. Before we even received their quote we knew they were the partner we needed.
Once you are a client, a consultant engineer will visit your key locations to conduct a risk assessment, identifying potential hazards that could expose your business to property and business income loss. Leveraging 175-plus years of experience and research, the consultant engineer will discuss these exposures with your location personnel and provide recommendations that can be implemented to reduce the likelihood or severity of loss.
Our consulting engineer has been great at explaining to us the hazards present at our campus. While certain hazards are inherent in the nature of our properties, we are now aware of their existence and can choose to make improvements that make sense for our university.
Higher Education Client
The result of the consultant engineer’s visits is a risk report that identifies the exposures and recommends measures to reduce or eliminate them. We understand that you have to make decisions that are in the best interest of your business, and that fulfilling a recommendation may require more resources than you are able to make available. This doesn’t change the fact that the exposure still exists. The risk report and associated recommendations helps you make informed decisions about the exposures to your business and take action to eliminate those that are unacceptable.
It’s well known that Affiliated FM has high standards for fire sprinkler protection. We understand that adequate sprinklers are the most effective way to protect our property but the investment is also rather large and is taking time to complete. The engineering team has helped us implement human element programmes to reduce our likelihood of catastrophic fire while we work towards implementing our complete plan.
Retail client with critical distribution centres
Every client has a unique set of property exposures and risk tolerance levels. Your account engineer will work with your corporate decision-makers to identify and prioritise the greatest exposures to a disruptive property loss. Together we will develop a plan to eliminate the exposures you deem unacceptable. Once a plan has been established and agreed upon, your account engineer will help coordinate the appropriate resources to help you execute your plan. Check out the services page to learn more about available resources.
When we first began our relationship with Affiliated FM we expected to simply purchase insurance. After a few months it became apparent that they are not just another insurance company. They’ve been instrumental in helping us implement a consistent property risk management philosophy with all of our property managers.
National real estate client
A core belief at Affiliated FM is that clients should not be vulnerable to large catastrophic property losses that could affect their business growth. Leveraging 175-plus years of experience and research, we educate our clients about the exposures that threaten their properties, and help train their personnel to implement solutions that can reduce the likelihood and severity of disruptive loss. To accomplish these goals, our consultant engineers visit locations, account engineers provide customised training, and we also offer more than 15 online courses.
As a retailer, we have a lot of stores that have relatively low value. However, even the smallest water leak loss can disrupt the shopping experience for our customers—ultimately hurting our brand. Affiliated FM’s online training course, designed specifically for our store managers, helps us minimise these nuisance losses while establishing best practices across our properties.

Your business is always evolving. You may be making additions or improvements to your property or acquiring new properties and business units. As your business changes, so does your property exposure. Affiliated FM is able to help you navigate these changes, identifying exposures early on in the process and giving you information you need to make educated decisions about the new potential for property loss exposure.
Prior to signing the lease on a new distribution centre, we had an Affiliated FM engineer do a baseline risk assessment of the property. During the visit, the engineer determined that the sprinkler system would not be adequate to protect our assets. We were able to leverage this information and have the building owner make the necessary improvements prior to completing the deal.
Before providing a proposal to your client, your production underwriter may require that an account engineer visit a few of their locations. We understand that this can slow the quoting process, but it helps to begin the relationship on a solid foundation of mutual understanding. Getting this information up front helps avoid unwanted surprises in the future.
Responsive, reasonable and hard working. I am impressed with the close relationship between my production underwriter and account engineer. It is obvious that all departments are interested in the success of the client and broker.
A consultant engineer visits your client’s key locations to conduct a risk assessment. Exposures uncovered during this visit provide you a great opportunity to work with the engineering team and your client to develop practical solutions that meet your client’s risk tolerance levels. See our services page to learn more about the different risk identification, management and improvement tools you can offer your clients.
I am continually impressed with the engineering team. They are always thinking about the client's needs and expectations, bending over backwards to find solutions.
The Risk Report provides an outline of the exposures present at your client’s locations. This report and its associated recommendations offer a great opportunity to determine with your client if the exposures identified are outside their risk tolerance levels. Your account engineer will work with you to identify cost-effective, practical solutions for your client.
Affiliated FM always calls it how they see it. They don’t shy away from having the difficult conversations with me and our mutual clients. Their recommendations are based on science, which is incredibly empowering when discussing how to help protect my client's business.
